Former Employee Kills Boss At Mental Health Clinic

Guy had worked at the clinic, until being fired last year. This morning,
just before 9 a.m., he storms in armed with a handgun and a shotgun – guess
he read all the a.t-c recommendations about having a secondary weapon.

Oddly enough he started out with the handgun, instead of the other way
around. After killing his former boss, he discarded that gun and reached
for the long gun.

That’s when the heroics occurred. An employee tackled him, getting help from
a homeless man who was there as a client. They wrestled him down, and all
that was left was the drive to 850 Bryant,.. and a lot of paperwork.

In it’s usual tradition of poor journalism, the major paper here in town
carried this account by the Associated Press. Guess all of the reporters
were busy doing stories on rising property prices, traffic congestion, or
another of their endlessly regurgitated topics.

An employee who was fired from a mental health center last year returned to
the office Monday and opened fire with a handgun, killing a worker before
being wrestled to the floor.

Gregory Gray, 54, of San Francisco, was arrested and charged with murder,
police said. He was being held in a San Francisco jail.

Police did not immediately know what motivated the attack or if the shooter
was targeting the slain man. Police spokesman Neville Gittens said Grey has
a criminal record but provided no further details.

The shooter had discarded the handgun and was reaching for a shotgun when he
was tackled, police said.

“They subdued him before he could do a lot worse,” said Seth Katzman, an
administrator at Conard House Inc.

Katzman identified the victim as Bruce Franks, who worked for Conard for
about three years. Police and the city’s medical examiner could not
immediately confirm the dead man’s identity.

Katzman said Franks was a father of two who worked in homeless shelters
helping people get their Social Security checks.

“He was a good employee and a good guy who cared about his clients a lot,”
he said. “I knew him well enough to respect him and to like him.”

The attack occurred shortly before 9 a.m. at a Conard community service
office in the South of Market neighborhood. The company provides mental
health and social services and has helped administer some of the city’s new
“Care Not Cash” housing services for the homeless.

Police said six employees were in the office when the gunman entered and
shot his former co-worker. After he dropped a handgun and began reaching for
a shotgun, police said a male case worker tackled him and yelled for help.
That drew the attention of a client, who helped wrestle the man to the
floor.

As the men struggled, a transient grabbed the shotgun, wrapped it in a coat
and dashed into the street, Gittens said.

An arriving police officer asked the two to keep the gunman pinned down
while he took the shotgun away from the transient. The gunman was arrested
soon after, Gittens said.

Katzman, the clinic’s director of supportive housing, said the gunman was
fired from the center in September.

The center is described on its Web site as the “oldest and one of the most
successful programs of its kind,” providing housing and other support
services for emotionally troubled adults. It will remain open with a reduced
staff through the week.

Nation’s First Men’s Health Center

This is an outstanding example of a community seeing the needs of their
men.
Men are in a crisis situation with health care in this country today.

Baltimore opens nation’s first men’s health center

The Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) in partnership with the W.K.
Kellogg Foundation’s Community Voices: Healthcare for the Underserved, and
the Vision For Health Consortium, recently opened the nation’s first
fulltime men’s health center, specially designed for males between the ages
of 19 and 64, who are uninsured or underinsured.

“The Men’s Health Center is a model for municipalities nationwide struggling
with the medical and social consequences of the growing numbers of men
without health insurance,” says, Hakim Farrakhan, Deputy Commissioner, BCHD.

The Men’s Health Center closes the gap for the estimated 55,000 city men who
have no health insurance. While there are a number of facilities providing
services for uninsured women and children, men who lack health benefits
because they are unemployed, work contractually or part-time and cannot
afford to purchase health insurance, often postpone routine care.

Studies have shown that many of these men will self-treat or seek emergency
room services when their illness becomes acute. For a public health
department charged with ensuring the good health of all its citizens these
options are both inadequate and expensive.

Our goal is to build healthy families, one man at a time. The Men’s Health
Center provides access to quality primary care, regardless of a man’s
ability to pay, says Farrakhan.

Since its opening, the center has treated middle aged men who haven’t seen a
doctor in decades, young working fathers and students from a nearby college.
Through the center’s outreach strategy, 44% of the patients seen are
employed.

In order to improve the health status of men “we must address all the issues
a man without health insurance may encounter,” says Lawrence Shorter Project
Manager, Kellogg Foundation’s Community Voices initiative.

After being seen by a medical provider, each man is assigned an outreach
worker, who can link him to a
comprehensive network of services, including career counseling, drug
treatment, dental care and pharmacy assistance.

The center is funded by the Baltimore City Health Department and private
grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and
Vision For Health Consortium.

Before the year is out, the BCHD plans to expand services to include primary
care and outreach at the Men’s Center in East Baltimore and align with the
Park Heights Community Health Alliance to launch a new men’s health facility
in Northwest Baltimore.

THE VIRUS AND VIRAL DISEASES

Viruses are not cells. They do not have a nucleus or other organelles that
are associated with cells. They have no metabolism and are considered
genetic parasites in that they use the host cell for but one purpose—to
replicate their genetic material and produce progeny virions (infectious
viral particles). The effect on the host cell, which can range from no
effect, to a disruption in cellular function, to killing of the host cell,
is related to the disease state caused by the infecting virus.

The structural organization and morphology of viruses vary. Basically they
are composed of a protein, called the capsid, that surrounds their genetic
material—nucleic acid of either DNA or RNA. Together this structure is
called the nucleocapsid. In addition, some viruses have an outermost
covering called the envelop that is added to the virus as the virus buds
from the host cell. Thus, this structure is of host cell origin. The lipid
composition of this envelop is identical to the host cell membrane; it may
carry some of the host cell membrane proteins as well. The virus can add
its’ own proteins to this envelop. An example of such an enveloped virus is
HIV.

The size of animal viruses range from a diameter of approximately 20
nanometers (nm = 10- 9 meters) for Parvoviruses to approximately 200nm for
Poxviruses. The diameter of animal cell is approximately 0.01mm (millimeter=
10 – 3 meters).

The highest taxonomic grouping for viruses is the Family with subdivision
into subfamilies, genera, species, and strains or serotypes.

In humans, viruses can cause a variety of diseases and have been associated
with some cancers; cervical cancer, some lymphomas, and T-cell leukemias.
Some viruses can be introduced into human population from other animals
resulting in serious and sometimes fatal disease; the flu virus from birds
and pigs, HIV from some primates and the West Nile Virus from birds via the
mosquito for example. In the case of the West Nile, the virus is responsible
for the recent outbreaks of a sometimes lethal encephalitis along the east
coast, from Massachusetts to Maryland; introduced into Queens New York from
Israel.

An otherwise benign virus, in its’ particular host species, when introduced
into another species can be carcinogenic or result in a disease previously
not found in the new host. This reservoir of potentially infectious and
deadly pathogens represents a serious health threat in an era when every
household has its’ “pet”…from the traditional cat or dog to exotic “pet”
primates, birds, and pigs…etc. These animals are moving into this country
without the proper enforcement of health and regulatory standards
representing a threat to the health of susceptible Americans.

A virus is either benign or pathogenic..none have been found, to date, to be
beneficial…excepting those used as vectors in Gene Therapy.
